A Guide to the Floral Scent Family

When it comes to fragrances, there are several categories or ‘families’ that scents fall under, including ‘woody’ and ‘spicy’’. However, the floral scent family is considered one of the more diverse and popular groups. From soft powdery notes to rich tropical scents, there is truly something for everyone.

But what perfume smells the best? While some of the most popular floral scents include rose, jasmine, and lavender, it is up to you to decide which one you’re most drawn to.

Here at The French Parfumerie, we manufacture a variety of oil-based fragrances and our virtual shop allows you to buy perfume online in South Africa. In this article, we’ll delve into the floral scent family to provide some valuable insight and scent recommendations.

White Flowers

White flowers such as jasmine, orange blossom, ylang-ylang, gardenia, and magnolia provide exceptionally popular notes for floral fragrances. They are also sometimes referred to as ‘sensual’ flowers and all have the same indole molecule that gives these flowers their dreamy scent.

Recommendation: No 112 as it has orange blossom and jasmine middle notes.

Spring Flowers

Spring flowers provide fresh, vegetal scents and are associated with hope and happiness. Some popular examples include daffodils, narcissus, and hyacinths. The notes offered by these flowers are often described as ‘green’, however, not all spring flowers can be naturally used in fragrance production.

Rosy Scents

Rose provides a classic scent that has been used in fragrances for centuries. While there are dozens of rose varieties out there, only these two are used in perfumery:

  • May rose – known for its honey-like scent
  • Damask rose – known for its delicate, sweet scent

Recommendation: No 01 as this popular rosy scent is perfect for all occasions.

Powdery Flowers

Powdery flowers include the likes of iris, mimosa, violet, heliotrope, and cassia. While they are not as commonly used in fragrances as roses and jasmine, these powdery flowers offer unique scents that often come with woody or fruity accents. Be sure to look out for these notes if you want a fragrance that’s a little different.
